Tony

Coach Tony DeTomasi is a CFS coach and one of the gym’s owners. You’ll usually catch him coaching on Fridays and Saturdays, but don’t be surprised though if he pops up behind the whiteboard any day of the week. When asked why he loves CrossFit, Tony says it’s all about combining functional, everyday movements into a constantly varied program that helps people stay strong, healthy, and fit for life. Even better? Doing it alongside an incredible community that’s both competitive and genuinely supportive. In his words, there’s nothing else like it.

Tony’s favorite movements to coach are back squats and deadlifts for strength, and ring or bar muscle-ups for gymnastics. Squats and deadlifts are foundational movements that carry over to everyday life and everything we do in the gym, and he loves seeing athletes get stronger in them. As for bar and ring muscle-ups? They’re just plain fun—and challenging.

His favorite CrossFit workout is Murph because it’s a brutal test of both physical and mental toughness, made even more meaningful because it’s performed in honor of a great cause. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Tony has a strong dislike for thrusters. Why? Because they’re miserable…and dumb. Dumb—but undeniably effective and incredibly important as a full-body movement (even if he still insists they’re dumb).

Outside of the gym, Tony enjoys traveling, eating, hunting, and cheering on the 49ers. His favorite food is wood-fired pizza, and he firmly believes that dipping pizza in ranch dressing should be illegal…straight to jail! While he loves hunting, he assures vegans that he’s not very good at it. His coolest travel experience so far was camping and hiking on an active volcano in Guatemala.

Tony’s favorite dad joke is “How to catch a polar bear”— If you want the answer, you’ll have to ask him in the gym. His favorite quote and life reminder is:

“Always keep your gratitude higher than your expectations.”
