Coach
Coach Dale Matsuoka is truly a CFS original! Dale has been with the gym since nearly the beginning—though these days, he might have a little more gray in his beard. If you stop by the gym on a Sunday, Dale is the coach you’re guaranteed to see. He’s there every Sunday and rarely misses one. And if you bring in a workout you found online—no matter how creative or questionable—Dale will make sure you’re properly set up and ready to perform.
When asked what he loves most about CrossFit, Dale points to the community and the adaptability of the sport. His favorite movements to teach are deadlifts and old-school Atlas stones. His favorite CrossFit benchmark workouts are Randy and Grace—which makes sense, since he clearly enjoys fast, intense Olympic lifting. That might also explain why muscle-ups are his least favorite skill; gymnastics just aren’t his thing.
From Monday through Saturday, you’ll find Dale enjoying his favorite hobbies, including rucking, watching the Dallas Cowboys and Texas Rangers, riding roller coasters, sleeping, trying new restaurants, and spending time with his “zoo.” Yes—a zoo. Dale’s pets include two cats, a chihuahua, a snake named Pretzel (rescued from the road), a giant mantis named Zelda, and a rabbit.
Dale’s go-to foods are ground beef, blueberries, and ricotta cheese drizzled with honey—hopefully not all in one meal. When it comes to travel, he couldn’t narrow it down to just one destination, so Japan and Zion both earned a spot at the top of his list.
Dale’s favorite quote is:
“There are no bad teams, only bad leaders.”
